Background

Originally formed in 2002, the Hendricks County Alliance for Diversity is an interfaith, intercultural group of citizens committed to fair and equal treatment of all citizens.  Its mission is to work toward smoothing the way for the increasing ethnic, religious and racial diversity of Hendricks County. The Alliance envisions a county where
people of all races, creeds and cultures will be fully accepted members of the community, where all people are welcome to participate in the life of the community.

Some activities of the Alliance for Diversity in past years included collecting signatures for The Birmingham Pledge www.birminghampledge.org), hosting a book signing by the late Rev. Ed Harris, author of the book Miracle in Birmingham, sponsoring the Freetown Village play “A Matter of Justice”, introducing area libraries to the children’s curriculum “Different and the Same”, having a booth at local festivals, and organizing the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration for Hendricks county from 2003 through 2009.
Recent Activity

Due to a number of circumstances, the Alliance was inactive from 2009 until 2011, but since that time has been re-energized!   We have participated in a couple of community festivals to raise awareness and will be conducting the 2013 Hendricks County Dr. Martin Luther King Day celebration.  Be sure to mark your calendar for Monday, January 21, 2013 beginning at 7:00 p.m.  The event will be held at the Friends Meeting, 105 S. East St. in Plainfield, and our keynote speaker will be Pat Payne, Director of the Crispus Attucks Center which includes the Office of Multicultural Education for the Indianapolis Public Schools and the Crispus Attucks Museum.  Ms. Payne has been with IPS since 1962 and has received a long list of awards and accolades including Teacher of the Year, Black Woman of the Year, NAACP Education Award, Indianapolis Education Association's Human Rights Award, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Rights Award, and many more. We are delighted that she will be our speaker!
We have a number of other activities in the discussion or planning stages, including the organization of a listening session in conjunction with Focus 2020 (www.infocus2020.org) and working with the Peace Learning Center to bring the ACT Out Ensemble to area schools.  ACT Out Ensemble (www.actout.org) is social issue theatre that both educates and entertains, while it engages students in discussion about social issues and how they are impacted or how they might impact others, knowingly or unknowingly.
With all of this and more going on, we can always use more help.  If you are interested in issues of diversity and would like to get involved, please contact us!
